The essay examines the legal status of indigenous people in the Mexican legal system, considered from a comparative perspective. Starting from the provisions of the Constitution of 1917, modified in 1992 and then in 2001, it is possible to observe an expansion of the rights of indigenous peoples. This is in line with the pluricultural composition of the Mexican state, although there are still problems of effectiveness of the protection of indigenous communities.
