Abstract

Data form our digital identities and are the foundation of every activity carried out online, constituting the basis on which the digital society stands. In the light of the European Union legal acts of reference, the contribution, after analyzing the big data, examines the emerging ethical-social questions and the legal issues involved, relating to ownership, responsibility, competition, rights protection and personal data protection. In consideration of the critical issues, the contribution outlines the principles and legal instruments suitable for achieving an ethical and legal governance of big data, firmly based on transparency, openness and collective control.
