Federal thought and the autonomous unitary State. An attempt at a historical framework – The work is divided into three parts: the first shows how "original" federalism opposed European monarchies and colonialism in the name of the freedom of the territories; the second explores the crisis of the European empires after the end of the First World War and the development of a new form of state that will be articulated in the two variants of unitary federalism and regionalism. Finally, it will explore the different ways in which the theme of secession has been addressed in common law (Canada and the United Kingdom) and civil law (Spain) systems.
