An illiberal transition: the decline and end of the monarchy in Portugal – The end of the Portuguese monarchy marked the failure of reforms aimed at “modernizing” the administration of the Iberian State by aligning it with other European models. The period of confusion following the regicide of Carlos I in 1908 led to the triumph of dictatorship and the end of the parliamentary phase. This period also marked the beginning of the royal family’s exile, which lasted until 1950, when there were no longer any direct heirs of the last sovereign, Manuel II.
