Abstract

Albania’s May 2025 political elections: between (a lot of) continuity and (a little) renewal – In the troubled history of Albania, during which Italy played a significant role, the phase following the end of the communist regime has seen a heated electoral competition, sometimes conditioned by measures adopted by the judicial authority against candidates (accused of corruption). The political elections of May 2025, which saw the landslide victory of Edi Rama, in excellent relations with the current Italian Government on various issues, including those related to irregular immigration and migrant adminisrative detention centers (CPR), have nevertheless shown political programs that are not very different from each other. Uncertainties remain about the future of Albania, also as a result of the Vetting process that has (heavily) affected the Albanian judicial system.
