New media and artificial intelligence are challenging the traditional legal categories applied in the field of communication and information. This paper discusses how and to what extent artificial intelligence is changing freedom of expression as we know it, based on the assessment of three guiding principles in this area (truth and transparency, pluralism, and non-discrimination). The authors combine a more theoretical analysis with the discussion of some crucial examples and case-studies from a comparative law perspective. Finally, some general coordinates of the main opportunities and challenges involved in this field will be presented.
