Since the beginning of its republican history, Mexico has had a presidential form of government. Mexican presidentialism developed and functioned utterly different than the US prototype from which it was deeply inspired. This distancing was also possible thanks to various extra-legal factors, which weakened the system of checks and balances, attributing unquestionable supremacy to the executive power, in whose hands political power is concentrated. This text analyzes the distinct stages of Mexican presidentialism from its origins through the “perfect dictatorship”, the democratic transition, and the “fourth transformation”.
