In this work, the authors retrace 120 years of constitutional, political and social history from Cadiz to the Second Republic. The search for the causes of the abolition of the Monarchy in 1931 has taken many directions exploring all the points of fragmentation that have emerged over time, from regionalism to the labour movement, which challenged persistent elements of the old regime, such as caciquismo and praetorianism, a constant feature of the 19th and much of the 20th centuries. The Authors focus on the much-debated and divisive issue in Spanish doctrine of the King’s responsibility for the failure of the parliamentary monarchy to evolve and for the advent of the dictatorship, within an explanatory framework centered on the triad “monarchy, religion and the army”.
