Republican transitions and decolonization trajectories in some Caribbean islands: reflections from the case of Barbados

Abstract

The constitutional identity of the Caribbean countries is related to their history and to the insular element as well as to the colonization dynamics, which have deeply influenced both the form of State and the form of government of the legal systems of the area. Drawing from Barbados’ republican transition as compared with the one completed by Trinidad and Tobago, this article underlines that the complexities surrounding decolonization trajectories in the area are rooted also in an institutional factor concerning the sources of law and specifically the origin of the Caribbean constitutional texts, which directly stem from British Parliament’s acts.
