Citizen participation as an essential element for corruption prevention and the promotion of integrity in the public sector - Citizen participation in the fight against corruption has become crucial since the adoption of the UNCAC Convention. There are, at present, two main kinds of participation in this field: spontaneous citizen participation through control, engagement, and evaluation on the one hand, and bodies and committees regulated by law at national, regional and local level, on the other. Notwithstanding the common international references to anti-corruption participation, each state decides whether and how to regulate these participatory spaces. Anti-corruption participation is currently increasing, in those legal systems where the corruption prevention model has already been adopted. However, there are some issues that hinder the full implementation of these participatory processes.
