The local dimension of renewable energies communities: insularity as an optimal condition? - This paper analyses the relationship between insularity and renewable energy communities (REC). EU directives clearly recommend the territorial dimension of REC which aim "to provide environmental, economic or social community benefits." These goals can be achieved involving local stakeholders, authorities and citizens.
Due to widespread insularity and increasing energy poverty, Greece enacted a specific law promoting the participation of local authorities in REC of the smallest islands. This experience suggests that "energy insularity" can be countered with energy communities. Therefore, if the insular dimension is primarily territorial, it could be an optimal condition for the development of REC.
