The essay focuses on the principles of the European Union in environmental matters, which have gradually become established as the process of European integration has evolved. These principles are interpreted extensively by the Court of Justice and have a significant impact on EU and national policies. Some formal distinctions and classifications are highlighted, as well as their meaning and effectiveness. Finally, an inconclusive judgement is made on the future prospects of the Union's environmental principles, as the war in Ukraine threatens to weaken their concrete application.
