Abstract: The power of the states to protect public health - All States broadly accept that public health is a public responsibility. Law plays crucial roles in the field of public health, from defining the power and jurisdiction of health agencies, to influencing the social norms that shape individual behavior. Despite its importance, public health law has been neglected. The novel coronavirus pandemic has revealed deep underlying problems in the public health systems of the States. The Article examines the current state of public health law in 5 different States and the ability of public health authorities to implement basic disease-control measures.
