The paper outlines the significant causes and events that led to the collapse of the Iranian Pahlavi dynasty in 1979. It also analyses two aspects of its controversial legacy in contemporary Iran. The first one concerns the long and troubled dispute regarding the so called “Pahlavi assets” (properties, in the United States, within the control of the estate of the last Shah or of any close relative of the last Shah), that began as early as a few days after the revolutionary government took office. The second one discusses the potential political involvement of Reza Cyrus Pahlavi, the eldest son of the last Shah, in efforts to overcome the current Iranian regime and facilitate a constitutional transition.
