“ReArm Europe” and surroundings. On the militaristic and warmongering turn of the European Union

Abstract

The article deals with the European rearmament. It starts with the analysis of the key measures adopted by the European Union in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war until the presentation of the “ReArm Europe”, later rebranded “Readiness 2030”. Then, it focuses on the features and the disruptive consequences of what I call the militaristic and warmongering turn of the European Union, which is strictly related to the rearmament: from the western supremacism which is imbued with to the questions of the (missed) creation of a common defence for Europe and the “elephant in the room” represented by Atlanticism, as well as the risk, better, the certainty, to enter in a new season of austerity for the people (also) because it is planning to earmark all the available resources for warfare programmes.
