Not just an Economic Group - The Development of the Third BRICS Cornerstone – This contribution aims to present and frame the BRICS as a novel structure of international cooperation, comprising subjects and entities that are frequently unrelated to the actions of individual Member States. These States are linked by growing economic, legal, and social interests. The analysis will focus on the initiatives of the so-called 'third pillar' of the BRICS, namely cultural and people-to-people cooperation. Finally, this contribution will analyse the challenges to which BRICS cooperation will be subjected following the entry of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia and Iran. In addition to the cultural and political diversity among the member states, the entry of rivalries and conflicts between the components provides opportunities for the BRICS to be used as a forum for the mediation of such crises.
Keywords: BRICS multilateral cooperation; BRICS third pillar; People-to-people cooperation; BRICS plus expansion
