Abstract

The war between Russia and Ukraine can be explained as a consequence of the Russian national claims. These are linked to the unlimited conception of power inherited by Russia, and the idea that the “sacred” Russian territories must be united. The increasingly authoritarian trend experienced by Russian politics is consistent with an aggressive foreign policy strategy, which has recently resulted in the invasion of Ukraine. This paper considers the Russian national identity as pivotal in the understanding of the current war, also considering the constitutional evolution that led to the 2020 Reform.
