This article examines the evolution of the discipline of the use of force from the United Nations Charter and its immediate antecedents to the present day. With regard to the current international regime, it primarily focuses on the relationships between UN law and general international law to ascertain, in particular, whether in situations of Security Council paralysis, international law admits the possibility of unilateral interventions by States in response to serious breaches of erga omnes obligations.
