The High Council of the Judiciary in France between proposals for change and conservative resistances

Abstract

The article focuses on the French Council for the Judiciary. After a reconstruction of the historical evolution, the author analyses the current organisation of the body, considering its composition and its functions. The final part of the article is devoted to analysing the prospects for the future, paying special attention to the position of the public prosecutors and to the results of the recent parliamentary investigation into the independence of the Judiciary.
