From the Silk Road to the Belt and Road Initiative: contents and legal value analysis of the China-Italy MoU

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this article is to provide a brief analysis on the recent Memorandum of Understanding between China and Italy with regard to the Chinese President Xi Jinping Programme about the rebirth of ancient Silk Road: the so called Belt and Road Initiative. Starting from the evaluation of the legal value of the MoU in international law, the contents of this document will be analysed in order to understand what are the current margins of Italy’s manoeuvring, considering its participation in the European Union.
