The present paper analyzes the development of the liberal thought. Namely, the transition from liberalism to neoliberalism, the Third Way undertaken by the political authorities between the first and second world war to underpin the economical order; the ordoliberal thought and the introduction of the idea of «economic constitution» (Wirtschaftsverfassung); the transition to the social market economy by Alfred Müller-Armack. The final aim is that of interpreting the development of the social market economy in the German area through the lens of the current clash between models of capitalism.
