Environmental protection has become a firm point on the global political agenda. The challenges are not limited to climate change and sustainable development but also to the damage caused during armed conflicts. During the 20th century, the latter issues have gradually emerged anchored in the principles of international humanitarian law and, despite many steps forward, the framework of state responsibilities is still fragmented. The recent case studies offered by the Azerbaijan-Armenia dispute and the crisis in Ukraine demonstrate this lacuna, and it is believed in doctrine that the solution can only be found in the broadest international consensus.
