Abstract

The paper argues that ‘illiberal’ constitutionalism is contradictory and impossible, that populist and sovranist shortcuts are unfeasible, and that ‘constitutional’ democracy (a model where democracy is enhanced rather than merely extended) is not replaceable. It then focuses on the transition – possible although not automatic – from constitutional democracy with populist/sovranist government to illiberal democracy until democrature: all of them ‘intermediate and temporary’ regimes between the classic models of the democratic and the authoritarian/totalitarian States.

Keywords: Constitucional democracy; Popular/political/populist constitutionalism; Populism; Sovereignism; Democrature.
