Democrazia e religione nell’orizzonte costituzionale

Democracy and Religion in the constitutional horizon

  • Pasquale Lillo

Abstract

The relationship between democracy and religion appears rather variable in the course of history, as it presents phases of heated dialectic alternated with moments of significant harmony. The essay aims to highlight that different democratic political systems of the contemporary world, based on their respective constitutional legal systems, are based on values of a religious nature, and in particular on certain principles originally affirmed by the Christian religion. In particular, most of today's democracies relating to the so-called cultural area "Western" have their roots especially in Christian thought, which originally placed its ideal and political premises, postulating the fundamental need to promote the dignity and reedom of the person also through the protection of human conscience towards public authority.
